VIDEO: Audi teases next-gen headlight tech

Ahead of Frankfurt, German car-maker teases new organic light-emitting diode tech

Audi has posted a video of what it’s calling the future of car headlamp technology.

Called organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), the new LED-replacing tech is said to consume between 3-4V, boasts an impossibly thin construction of less than a thousandth of a millimetre thick, casts no shadows and requires absolutely no reflector to emit sharp light that can be carved into different shapes.

Producing virtually no heat, OLEDs can also be controlled at different brightness levels and colours from what appears to be transparent films of plastic.

The other advantage is, since the OLED units are flat, rather than made up of small rectangles, the new tech can be arranged in less conventional car headlamp or tail light arrangements -- to the delight of car designers, no doubt.

Audi will release more information at the show in September.
