Volkswagen Amarok picks up tough Alpine packs

Limited-edition off-road packages developed by Seikel for Volkswagen Amarok V6 dual-cab 4x4 ute

Volkswagen Australia is set to make its current-generation 2022 Volkswagen Amaro dual-cab ute look tougher and go further, with new off-road-ready accessory packages to go on sale soon.

But the new Alpine and Alpine Plus packs won’t come cheap, and will be strictly limited, with VW only set to bring just 100 of each to Australia in the second quarter of 2022.

Available on the Volkswagen Amarok V6 Core Auto, V6 Sportline, Highline and Aventura grades, the packages were developed by off-road specialist Seikel and start at $6090 for the Alpine and $12,090 for the Alpine Plus.

Both bring an increase in ground clearance – up 25mm – thanks to a Koni RAID off-road kit comprising of twin-tube shocks with a 70mm bore all round, Eibach springs up front and special leaf spring brackets at the rear, with additional supports and bump stops.

Volkswagen says heavy-duty cast steel is also used to strengthen the lower portion of the front shocks.

Elsewhere, both the Alpine and Alpine Plus package feature a polyethylene snorkel and protective cladding for the wheel-arches.

The Alpine Plus package, which commands an extra $6000, adds underbody protection for the engine, transmission and rear diff, along with rock sliders, more protective cladding for the doors and a breather kit for the transmission, transfer case and front and rear differentials.

Amarok V6 Sportline and Highline buyers can also opt to pay another $1590 for an off-road tyre package, including five General Grabber AT3 tyres (255/60R18 112 H XL).

The chunkier rubber has large sidewall lugs to protect the tyre body from stones, as well as protection ribs that shield the tyre and bead area from damage caused by off-road obstacles, according to VW.

There are no changes to the Amarok’s 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine, which produces 165kW/550Nm in Core and Sportline auto model grades and 190kW/580Nm in Highline and Aventura.

It combines with an eight-speed automatic transmission and 4MOTION permanent 4x4 driveline.

Ryan Davies, head of Volkswagen Australia’s commercial vehicle team, said the partnership with Seikel ensures the Amarok V6, which is in its final year on sale before switching to a new generation based on the 2022 Ford Ranger, broadens its appeal for customers wanting a high-output powertrain with even stronger off-road capability.

“From a V6 Core Auto with an Alpine or Alpine Plus off-road package, through to our flagship Walkinshaw-enhanced models, the Amarok offers a breadth of choice to match its breathtaking performance,” he said.

The accessory packs are covered by Volkswagen’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, however the shock absorbers are covered by a separate three-year/100,000km warranty.
