Family SUVs
Family SUVs are vehicles that range from front-wheel drive models that seat five to seven-seaters that offer some soft-road and towing ability. More often than not, the family SUV is an alternative to people movers, but with more rugged looks. Inside, they're trimmed for comfort and refinement, rather than the hose-out rubber mats and hard-wearing plastics of traditional four-wheel drives.

1. Toyota RAV4
Launched in Australia during 1994, the Toyota RAV4 is a well established model name that has, nonetheless, evolved considerably from its conception. Originally a boutique styling exercise based on soft-road mechanicals and platform, the RAV4 quickly became a capable off-roader, underpinning Toyota's broader SUV range in Australia. The SUV has also grown drastically over time, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 five-door model nearly a metre longer than the first three-door model from 26 years ago. That first generation of Toyota RAV4 would have been a small SUV today, but the 2020 model is very definitely a medium SUV in VFACTS parlance.

2. Mazda CX-9
The Mazda CX-9, Mazda's biggest SUV, has long been popular among Aussie families, ever since its first launch in 2006. But when the second-generation version of the US-oriented large SUV arrived in 2016, it was named carsales Car of the Year. Available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive guise and priced between about $45,000 and $70,000, the CX-9 isn't the cheapest in its class and only comes with a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine and six-speed auto. But the CX-9's attractive design, spacious and comfortable interior, refined ride/handling package and generous level of quality and equipment makes it one of the best seven-seat SUVs available.

3. Volvo XC60
Currently the brand's mid-sized SUV, the Volvo XC60 was introduced to rival prestige European-built models such as the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Today, the XC60 is Volvo's best-selling model Down Under, available with five seats, in all-wheel drive only and featuring a generous line-up of engines that include petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and high-performance options. A range-topping XC60 Polestar was introduced in late 2019 to rival luxury/performance SUVs like the BMW X3 M40i and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, bringing 311kW of power and 670Nm of torque from its advanced 2.0-litre turbo-petrol/electric motor drivetrain combination.
