Fuel efficient Wagons

Fears that CO2 in the atmosphere is raising global temperatures have driven the development of fuel-efficient vehicles. The fuel-saving wagon is one such variant, using advanced technology to reduce fossil fuel dependence without compromising family-car functionality. These cars are four-cylinder models, rather than traditional six-cylinder cars, and feature sophisticated thermal management, aerodynamic styling and low-rolling resistance tyres to achieve their ends.

1. Skoda Fabia

The Skoda Fabia compact car has been around since 1999 but didn't arrive in Australia until 2011. Powered by small, efficient petrol and diesel engines, the front-drive runabout is based on the same platform architecture as the Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1 and delivers impressive ride and handling as a result. It doesn't have the tech and equipment levels to compete with its German rivals but the Skoda Fabia is more than a match for the top-sellers in the segment, like the Mazda2, Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Swift. Prices for the cheeky Czech range between around $17,000 and $25,000, and there is also a wagon version.

2. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

For a long time the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been the sales champion of the range in Australia, but has recently lost ground to its stablemates the GLC SUV and the smaller A-Class hatch and sedan. The C-Class is still the benchmark vehicle in the medium passenger-car segment above $60,000 however. Tracing its roots back to the W201 series of 190E from the mid 1980s, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has evolved over the years and in 2020 is past its prime in the 205 series model cycle. The range comprises sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible - all the way up to the powderkeg character of the V8-engined Mercedes-AMG C 63.

3. Toyota Prius V

Basically a seven-seat people mover, the Toyota Prius V is based on the third-generation Prius, but with a lithium-ion battery rather than the nickel metal-hydride battery of the five-seat Prius. Unlike earlier hybrids, particularly the first generation of Camry Hybrid, the Toyota Prius V is quite space-efficient, despite its compact external dimensions. Toyota introduced the Prius V to Australia in 2012, but much like conventional people movers in this market, the Prius V hasn't sold in the sort of numbers Toyota models usually achieve.
