Alpine mounts a comeback

Renault will revive an old sporting name when it launches a new two-seater in 2010

Renault has confirmed to Britain's Auto Express that a new era Alpine will go on sale sometime around 2010.

Alpine was a company committed to building lightweight sports cars with Renault mechanicals, perhaps best epitomised by the A110 model of the sixties and the later A310.

The new car is expected to adopt drivetrain components from the Megane Renaultsport RS and could be a competitor for cars as disparate as the Mazda MX-5, Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf GTi.

A test mule disguised with the bodywork of a Megane has already been caught testing at the Nurburgring. Flared wheelarches and unique wheel rims gave the game away.

Reports are very hazy at the present, but rumours suggest that the car may have its engine situated behind the cabin, driving the rear wheels -- as was the case with the A110.
