The bottom end of Audi's ever expanding new model range is beginning to get a little more love. In addition to the MINI Cooper rival, the already confirmed A1, Audi's CEO recently revealed that the A2 will be revived.
The Audi A2 was produced between the years 2000 and 2005 and was widely considered a flop due to its curious design and low power engines.
But in an interview with Autocar, Audi chief Rupert Stadler said there was "...clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3 [and upcoming A1]".
"If you don't have to explain a car like the A2, then it works," added Stadler.
When questioned on the prospect of a reborn A2, Audi Australia's Corporate Communications Manager told the Carsales Network, "We don't comment on speculation."
Given Audi Australia's recent history of releasing almost all available models in Australia, and it's quest to dethrone rival BMW as the top prestige marque in this country, the A2 -- if built -- would have a strong chance of finding its way here.
With changed conditions and consumer perceptions about compact cars -- and a much needed new style -- an all-new A2 would almost certainly be more profitable for Audi a second time around.
If the new model does come to fruition, it could be based on the underpinnings of the upcoming A1 compact car.
