Paris Motor Show-goers will be among the first to see the new flagship variant of Audi's tiny A1 range.
As reported by the Carsales Network earlier, the top-spec A1 variant, which had been expected to wear 'S1' badges, is now to be known as the A1 1.4 TFSI. The tiny terror shares its mechanicals and platform with the Volkswagen Polo GTi, but in this instance, they're clothed exclusively in Audi sheet metal.
For most prospective buyers, the heart and soul of the new A1 variant is the gutsy little engine that drives it. Developing 136kW of power and 250Nm of torque, the supercharged and turbocharged 1.4-litre direct-injection four-cylinder drives through the standard seven-speed dual-clutch S Tronic transmission to the front wheels. Audi claims that the engine, for all its performance potential, uses just 5.9 litres of fuel per 100km in combined-cycle testing and emits 139g/km of CO2, based on the same test. The acceleration time to 100km/h from a standing start requires 6.9 seconds and the car will go on to reach a provisional top speed of 227km/h.
Complementing the drivetrain are the car's underpinnings; comprising MacPherson struts at the front, rear torsion beam and ventilated front discs.
Inside, the A1 in this grade is fitted with standard front airbags, side-impact airbags and curtain airbags. Additionally, the car features seatbelt pretensioners and seatbelt force limiters.
Other items on the specification list include: xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights, LED interior lighting, High Beam Assistant, auto-on/off headlights, rain-sensing wipers, panoramic sunroof and a 465-Watt Bose audio system.
In Audi nomenclature, the trim level is 'Ambition' and that means 17-inch alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, black headlining and an S Line exterior package. The manufacturer plans for a retail launch in Europe towards the end of the year.
