From our original 30-strong contender list we revealed last week, it’s time to announce the 10 finalists and two wildcards that will undergo a week of rigorous testing in an attempt to secure the title of carsales Car of the Year 2023 proudly presented by Bingle.

In alphabetical order, here are the 12 models that will be put through the wringer of Australia’s number-one automotive consumer award this year.

Honda CR-V e:HEV RS

The 10 finalists are those that have impressed from the past 12 months of road testing while the two wildcards were chosen as vehicles the judging panel felt deserved a shot, despite not having been reviewed locally at the time of selection.

In order to qualify for carsales Car of the Year proudly presented by Bingle, each vehicle must satisfy the following eligibility criteria:

  • All-new or substantially upgraded model
  • Released in the prior 12 months
  • Available for testing
  • At least one variant priced below $250,000
  • Fitted with autonomous emergency braking and a reversing camera as standard across the range

carsales Car of the Year is determined by a combination of votes from the 10 judges after a week of testing and comprehensive cost of ownership data supplied to carsales exclusively by Australia’s number-one automotive valuation authority, RedBook.

RedBook’s scores are calculated based on the following six areas:

  • Price compared to other models in the same market segment
  • Depreciation: Average retail (non-private) value of a ‘good’ three-year-old example with 45,000km
  • Running costs: Fuel, tyres, insurance and finance over three years
  • Aftersales: Servicing, warranty and roadside assistance
  • New technology: Availability of nine safety features designed to protect occupants and other road users
  • Bonus points: Selected stand-out features standard across the range

The judges then provide their own assessment on four criteria:

  • Safety
  • Innovation and technology
  • Practicality and presentation
  • Road testing

Crucially, each vehicle is assessed in the context of its market segment rather than against the other finalists and the award is presented to the entire range rather than a single variant.

The 2023 carsales Car of the Year proudly presented by Bingle will be announced on November 15, but before then you’ll get to have your say via a reader poll to decide our 2023 People’s Choice award.

Stay tuned…
