Renault has revealed two new concepts based on its Kwid SUV, ahead of the global debut at the Geneva motor show on March 1.
The Kwid is fast becoming a best-seller in India, racking up 90,000 orders in just four months, and the new two concepts are described as design studies but could become reality if they prove a hit with show-goers.
The first concept, the Kwid Climber, copies other car-makers' tactic of adding some off-road toughness to their model.
In comes with a raised ride height, bigger bumpers and plenty of black plastic body cladding to provide extra protection from the scenery if you ever venture off-road.
Under the skin, mechanically, Renault hasn’t confirmed if there’s been any changes but it’s unlikely the Kwid SUV will ever be offered with the option of all-wheel drive.
The next concept is far more interesting and looks as if it’s been re-engineered by RenaultSport.
Called the Kwid Racer, the little SUV comes equipped with a wide front and rear track, a lower ride height, bigger 18-inch wheels, a complete new aero and, under the skin, plenty of weight saving.
Inside, the faster Kwid has had its rear seats junked in lieu of a half roll cage. The front driver and passenger, meanwhile, have race car-inspired bucket seats with four-point race harnesses. The attention to detail extends to the dash that’s now entirely covered by Alcantara and a trip computer that can log lap times.
It’s not clear what powers the Kwid Racer but the small SUV could come equipped with a more powerful turbocharged version of the little 0.8-litre petrol engine that powers base model.
As well as the two concepts, Renault India also announced it will soon offer a more powerful 1.0-litre petrol engine in the range to sit above the current normally aspirated 0.8-litre. The French car-maker also said the small Kwid would soon come with the option of a five-speed automated manual transmission called the Easy-R gearbox.
Based on Renault-Nissan’s all-new Common Module Family (CMF) and priced from just $7000 in India, the new budget hatch has already become a top-10 seller.
