DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: Xmotion concept previews another Nissan SUV

Nissan makes way for a “potentially ground breaking” new SUV

Is there such a thing as too many SUVs within your model portfolio?

Apparently not, according to Nissan. The Japanese marque has unveiled another high-riding prototype that could eventually preview a new production model -- a bit like the edgy 2015 Gripz concept, which had been touted as a possible replacement for Nissan's Z sports car.

The Xmotion (pronounced cross motion) was revealed at the Detroit motor show overnight, promising room for six passengers across three rows in a “potentially ground breaking compact SUV” that is as at home in the city as it is weekend adventures.

The concept purportedly fuses Japanese culture with American utility, while also taking in Nissan’s bourgeoning Intelligent Mobility technology through advanced connectivity and autonomous technologies.

“Signalling the future of Nissan design, the Xmotion concept’s stunning exterior features a powerful dynamic presence with understated sculptural beauty, including unique U-shaped highlights and a bold evolution of Nissan’s signature V-motion grille,” says Nissan.

The Xmotion’s styling theme is highlighted by a retractable “rooftop box” and tail lights inspired by Japanese wood work.

Inside, the Xmotion capitalises on its long and wide wheelbase to enable room for a freshly-conceived 4+2 passenger layout. With three rows of side-by-side seats, Nissan reckons the layout is well suited to ferrying around a young couple, another couple and either children and pets in the third row.

Furthermore, three digital displays span the width of the car’s instrument panel and can be controlled by gesture and eye movements.

“We envision the Xmotion concept to be a highly functional SUV that can be driven every day, yet can take the owners and friends to a national park or recreation area on a whim,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s vice president of global design.

“With its combination of style and technology, this concept fulfils Nissan’s mission of moving people to a better world.”
