Chinese car-maker Chery’s incoming Jaecoo luxury brand is preparing to launch in Australia with the all-new Jaecoo J7 mid-size SUV in the second half of this year, and now carsales has spotted what could be the second model for our market – the boxy Land Rover Defender-like Jaecoo J6.
If it looks familiar (and we’re not talking about Land Rover, Jeep or Mercedes-Benz G-wagen styling cues), that’s because the Jaecoo J6 you see here is a rebadged version of the Chery iCar 03 that launched in China last year.
Given Jaecoo is an export-specific entity, the J6 is a strong candidate to join the burgeoning range in Australia, slotting underneath the J7 and offering battery-electric power compared to the J7’s turbo-petrol and (possible) plug-in hybrid drivetrains.
A spokesperson for Chery Australia has also revealed to carsales that the Jaecoo J6 is under consideration for our market, but added there are “no confirmed plans yet”.
As previously reported, the larger Jaecoo J8 SUV is also under study for Australia.
Pitched at younger buyers, the Jaecoo J6 starts from the equivalent of $23,200 in its home market and is offered with both single-motor (135kW) and dual-motor (205kW) powertrain options, the latter sending the SUV from 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.5 seconds.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs – 65kWh and 69kWh – supplied by CATL provide a CLTC-verified range of up to 500km in the most efficient versions, while eight drive modes help the dual-motor variants hit the dirt.
Dimensions are officially listed at 4406mm long, 1910mm wide, 1715mm tall and 2715mm for the wheelbase, making it roughly the size of a Jeep Compass.
The J6 could be positioned as the upmarket alternative to the sporty-themed Chery Omoda E5, which is set to launch here mid-year as Chery’s inaugural EV.
