FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW: Audi gives glimpse of new driverless concept

German car maker promises to unveil two autonomous Frankfurt concepts, one of which claimed to be both ground-breaking and spectacular

Audi has teased a single pic of the first of two technologically advanced concepts it plans to reveal at the Frankfurt motor show on Tuesday September 12.

The single pic, released over the weekend, suggest a futuristic take on a sports car that appears to have been influenced by the current R8 supercar.

Despite its dynamic design, the concept teased hasn't been created for driving thrills but to showcase the car maker's next-generation of autonomous driving technology.

Audi hasn't confirmed which concept is being teased by the new images but has announced one of the cars it will unveil is a sporty SUV coupe that will measure in at 4.9 metres.

Based on the e-tron Sportback that was unveiled in April at the Shanghai motor show, the new concept comes with the firm's new electric quattro drive hardware that combines three powerful electric motors - together they produce a mighty 370kW.

Featuring advanced artificial intelligence (AI), that incorporates car-to-car communication, the new concept is claimed to have the capability of learning. That means, over time, the car's autonomous driving aids become more efficient and, even, more empathetic to other road users.

Capable of full autonomous driving at highway speeds, the latest concept is said to be able to safely change lanes at speeds of up to 130km/h.

The next concept is even more advanced, the car maker claims, as it will operate without any input from its human occupants. Instead, passengers will be able to focus on other activities.

Designed for longer journeys of up to 800km, the unnamed second concept is said to be driven by four electric motors and promises to feature a "ground-breaking" and "spectacular" exterior and interior design.

Stay tuned as all will be revealed this Tuesday.
