GM promises Chicago fun

General Motors president Mark Reuss says GM is planning some surprises for the Chicago auto show this week, hinting at a Camaro-based new car

Here's a mystery.

General Motors North America president Mark Reuss announced at a J.D. Power forum this week that his company would display a vehicle based on the Chevrolet Camaro platform at the Chicago auto show opening at the end of this week.

The announcement, however, didn't say whether the Camaro-based car was a production car or a concept model.

According to an article in The Detroit News, Reuss said "It will be fun. I'm not going to give you guys any product information other than what I gave (in the presentation). I'd ruin the whole show."

The pre-release show website gives nothing away concerning GM's intentions either - other than announcing the appearance of models such as the B-segment Chevrolet Sonic (nee Aveo), the Buick Verano (a version of the Chevrolet Cruze) and a coupe variant of the Cadillac CTS.

But Reuss did say GM was planning at least one more new vehicle at the show.

Again, nothing was provided to help along speculation, which leads to suggestions the Camaro-based car could be on show alongside a (BMW 3 Series size) Cadillac ATS, a new Chevrolet Malibu – or even a US-market Commodore to follow the acclaimed Pontiac G8 (without Pontiac badges following the demise of the brand).

Favouring the Commodore possibility is the lack of a rear-drive offering (read performance offering) in GM's present volume-car line-up – as well as its possibilities as a police pursuit vehicle.

As for Camaro speculation, apparently the most popular rumour circulating at present is that it could be the new Z28 variant, complete with supercharged 6.2-litre V8, that was originally rumoured for the Detroit show in January.

That would put some serious fire in the belly.

Good thing is, with the show opening at the end of the week, we don't have long to wait for answers....
