It’s 1994 and you’ve just witnessed Mr. Bean rolling down the street in an armchair on the roof of his ’77 Leyland Mini. You’re thinking… why didn’t cars ever come with lounge chairs for seats? Or at least something that comfortable.
That would be illegal, right? Controlling your vehicle from the roof of your car, of course, yeah. But what about an armchair on the inside? How dare we have plush, cushiony seats in our cars!? Fast forward 25 years, and Citroen reckons we can.
In fact, the French car maker prides itself on comfort. It’s tagline “Comfort is the new cool” relates to more than one thing - its new Progressive Hydraulic Cushion Suspension (the same tech used in Citroen’s World Rally Championship vehicles) and its Advanced Comfort seating.
Sure, they’re not exactly bouncy armchairs, but when Citroen’s new C5 Aircross SUV hits Aussie roads, top-spec Shine variants will include what could possibly be the comfiest car seats on the market. So comfortable even Goldilocks would approve.
We know that’s a rather big call, but the car maker has spent the last two years developing its Advanced Comfort seats alongside bedding industry engineers (mattress experts) and they might be onto something.
The C5 Aircross Shine will be the first Citroen to arrive in Australia with these new in-car couches - packed with a 15mm layer of soft and durable memory foam and covered in a mixture of supple leather-appointed and fabric trim.
Citroen says high-density foam in the front seats help passengers avoid poor posture after long periods of driving. And, having personally spent several hours driving and playing passenger in a new C5 Aircross last week, I can comfortably (forgive the pun) say they’re simply gorgeous - just the right amount of bounce-to-support ratio.
With mattress technology being a large focus during the development of the C5 Aircross’ seats, Citroen says the new SUV gives passengers the feeling of comfort in a portable living room.
But, don’t take our word for it. Visit your local Citroen dealer to feel them for yourself. Maybe take some popcorn, a blanket and your Netflix account too and test out the lounge-ability.
