A new MINI 5 Door variant is priced and specified to fill a gap between Cooper S and John Cooper Works models in the local range. But only 40 units will be available to Aussie buyers.
At $56,990, including on-road costs, the MINI Carbon is based on the 5 Door Cooper S, but with a tweaked JCW engine, JCW 17-inch alloy wheels and standard dynamic damper control. Output for the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder has been raised to 155kW and 300Nm – a 14kW and 20Nm increased over the standard Cooper S engine. The engine drives through a six-speed automatic transmission operable with shift paddles. A sports exhaust can be tuned on the fly for 'Sport' and 'Track' modes by means of a Bluetooth remote.
Cosmetic changes include an aerodynamic package with rear spoiler and carbon-fibre bonnet scoop/mirror caps. JCW features inside consist of sports seats, sports chrono pack and perforated-leather upholstery for the sports steering wheel, shift lever and door sills.
“Being based on the successful 5 door body style, the MINI Carbon Edition delivers strong performance and practicality to go with its exclusivity,” says Tony Sesto, general manager of the MINI brand in Australia.
“It’s the ideal stepping stone for the customer who revels in extra performance, but also seeks a flexible and comfortable daily driver,” he added.
The Carbon Edition takes its name from the Midnight Black metallic paint and Black Line trims for headlight/tail light bezels. Each car comes with a numbered identification badge and an ownership certificate featuring the VIN and build number.
