Nismo announces partnership with Williams

Nissan's go-faster division recruits the services of British-based engineering firm with F1-based expertise
Nissan’s high-performance Nismo division has announced an agreement with Williams Advanced Engineering – a division of the group that runs the eponymous Formula One team – to collaborate on the development of high-performance road cars.
According to the official press release, Nismo selected the UK-based concern for its specialist expertise of aerodynamics, simulation and material science.
The newly established partnership will see the two companies working together on developing future Nismo products for launch worldwide from 2014 and beyond.
Commenting on the new joint venture, Nismo president Shoichi Miyatani said: “Nismo is a brand built from over 30 years of racing experience and so it is fitting that we chose to work with a like-minded company such as Williams to develop the higher performance versions of our products.
“Williams has a proven history of making racing technology benefit road cars, and we look forward to starting this relationship during such a period of intensive product development for Nismo.”
Williams founder and team principal Sir Frank Williams echoed the sentiments, saying: “Williams Advanced Engineering has a history of developing world-class, high-performance products and this agreement is particularly exciting because of the ambition and potential of the Nismo brand.
“Both parties share a passion for racing and cutting edge technology and this collaboration will see us work closely together to develop cars that will be at the forefront of automotive technology.”
Nismo currently turns out high-performance versions of the Juke (pictured) and 370Z, and also in the works is a stove-hot version of the GT-R, which will become the third model to wear the Nismo badge.
The Nismo variant is expected to generate more than 425kW, in addition to gaining suspension tweaks and an exclusive bodykit equipped to set it apart from the regular GT-R.
Also reportedly in the pipeline is the Juke Nismo RS, which is expected to have a more potent powertrain than the 160kW unit that propels the Juke Nismo.
Nissan says it plans to roll out at least one new Nismo model each year during the Nissan Power88 period  (from 2011 to 2016), encompassing the breadth of the Nissan road car range.
Some sources are speculating the Nismo-Williams partnership will also result in an all-new ultra-high-performance offering (possibly pitched against the Ferrari/McLaren/Lambo brigade), as well as a challenger for outright honours at Le Mans in the LMP1 category.
