Nissan recalls more cars for Takata airbags

Local recalls for airbag defects approaching a million cars across all brands

A new recall for defective Takata airbags threatens to take the number of local cars affected closer still to a million.

Nissan Australia has advised that the latest Takata airbag recall applies to the front-passenger airbags of D22 Navara, Y61 Patrol, J31 Maxima and T30 X-TRAIL. The build dates for the Nissans named in the latest recall range from April 2007 to December 2008.

Along with the 93,000 Hondas recalled this week, the latest Nissan campaign – another 25,707 vehicles added to the tally – takes the number of local vehicles affected above 900,000.

As with the other recalls attributed to Takata airbags, the Nissans affected are fitted with airbags that might allow moisture to penetrate the airbag inflator. This could lead to the airbag's propellant deteriorating and metal shards propelled outward from the bag, potentially injuring the seat occupant.

As is the case for other manufacturers, the global recalls have placed a heavy burden on parts supply and Nissan will contact vehicle owners to let them know when the parts are available. Once the parts are in stock, vehicle owners are invited to have the airbag replaced at no cost to them.

Nissan advises that parts for 2003 model year vehicles previously recalled will begin to reach dealerships from this month and August. Parts for 2004-07 model year vehicles recalled will follow later, during the fourth quarter.

With this recall the list of vehicles understood to be fitted with the defective airbags now looks thus:
