New season. New team. New livery. Renault Sport Formula One Team has launched its official livery for the 2016 season F1 season in Melbourne overnight. And in keeping with the location, the new car was unveiled -- on a surfboard!
Renault Australia undertook the task of taking an F1 car onto the waves, engaging a Queensland-based company to build two giant 7.5m surfboards.
One actually took to the water for the launch video with Renault Sport Formula One Team drivers Kevin Magnussen and Jolyon Palmer, and Aussie female surfer Ellie-Jean Coffey and a mock-up of the team’s R.S.16 racer onboard. The other was more skateboard than surfboard and rolled into the Melbourne launch.

The launch video was filmed at Boat Harbour Beach near Kurnell in Sydney earlier this week.
The new team colours are predominately yellow and gold – the yellow and black at least is classical Renault. Indeed, Renault’s first-ever Renault F1 car, the RS01, hit the track in yellow and black in 1977.
“We wanted to do things a little differently. We’re in F1 to ultimately get lots of points on track, but also to get lots of attention off track, so we came up with this idea. To our knowledge it’s the first time an F1 car has ever surfed!” Cyril Abiteboul, Renault Sport Racing boss said.
“This latest livery is a nod to the RS01,” Abiteboul stated.
