Renault electric vehicles on track
French and Spanish manufacturing plants have been chosen to build Renault's new electric cars in 2011Renault is pushing forward with its electric vehicle (EV) plans, recently confirming that it will build two new EVs based on concept cars that will hit the road in Europe in 2011.
Intent on being a leader in the EV field, and having released a number of electric vehicle concept cars at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show, Renault is now moving forward with plans to build EVs in France and Spain, upgrading the tools and facilities to match.
The first French-made EV will be based on the Zoé Z.E. Concept while an EV drawing inspiration from the two-seater Twizy Z.E. will be built at the Valladolid plant in Spain.
Renault explains that the decision to build its first electric vehicles in France and Spain was to be "as close as possible to the sales market, namely Western Europe, in order to simplify logistics".
Along with sister company Nissan building the LEAF EV in Yokohama in Japan, which is also due for sale in 2011, the Renault-Nissan Alliance is in good stead to becoming a world leader in the production of zero emission vehicles.
After Mitsubishi's iMiEV, the Nissan LEAF is expected to be one of the first electric vehicles coming to Australia, scheduled to arrive in 2012.
