Renault reveals two-stroke diesel
Oil-burning two-stroke engine among a host of advances revealed by French makerRenault has revealed a gaggle of new powertrain technologies at its Innovations@Renault event in Paris, led by a turbocharged and supercharged two-cylinder, two-stoke diesel engine.
The oil-burning two-stroke produces between 35-50kW of power and 112-145Nm of torque and is claimed to be highly efficient. However, the French car-maker says its performance would need to be improved before such an engine concept is considered for production in its small models.
Apart from the 'Twizy Delivery Concept', Renault has also developed a new electric motor entirely in-house. About 10 per cent smaller than the unit it currently employs, it produces 65kW and 220Nm.
A turbocharged three-cylinder dual-fuel petrol/LPG engine was also showcased, promising 25 per cent lower fuel costs thanks to idle-stop, brake energy recovery, eco-mode and dual-fuel systems.
Finally, Renault revealed its HYDIVU (Hybrid Diesel for LCVs) prototype based on the Master van. It combines a twin-turbo dCi 165 ENERGY diesel engine, 48-volt starter motor and an alternator-type electric motor that reduces the load on the engine and delivers additional torque when required.
