SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: Production MG GS SUV revealed

Chinese-owned MG shows off the production version of its first ever SUV

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has revealed the first MG-badged SUV in the firm’s 91-year history.

Called the MG GS, the new SUV is already on sale in China and, according to MG’s design boss Anthony Williams-Kenny, is the fruit of a collaboration between MG’s Shanghai and Longbridge design teams.

Picking up where the well-received GS concept left off, the production version stays true to the 2013 Shanghai motor show car and adopts the same design language as the MG 6 sedan.

Measuring 4500mm long the new SUV is 40mm shorter than Australia’s best-selling Mazda CX-5 but at 1855mm wide and 1675mm tall is both wider and taller than its Japanese rival.

Riding on SAIC’s all-new SUV platform, MG hasn’t yet confirmed what engines will be available with the GS, but the safe money is it will come with the 164kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol combined with a six-speed dual clutch automatic. An all-new 125kW/250Nm 1.5-litre petrol turbo is also expected.

On the diesel side the current 110kW/350Nm 1.8-litre offering from the MG 6 will also be an option.

On sale in Europe in 2016 it’s uncertain if the MG GS will make it Down Under. MG has struggled with its Australian operation and, despite being in existence for more than twelve months, has failed to sell 100 cars. Biggest challenge has been gaining compliance for its full range of cars but those issues are believed to be fixed and now MG has ambitious plans to expand the dealer network with a reported 10 new sites opening in the near future.
