European versions of the 2023 Genesis GV60 electric SUV will come as standard with a purportedly world-first facial recognition system for the central locking system and it could soon become available in Australian.
Going one step beyond the widespread hands-free proximity key and Genesis’ own fingerprint recognition system, the ground-breaking new system – dubbed ‘Face Connect’ – employs a face recognition sensor with a deep-learning image processing controller, allowing drivers to lock and unlock their GV60 without the need for a physical key.
An LED indicator is integrated into the B-pillar to provide visual feedback on the status of the car, while the relevant information (ie: your face and fingerprint) is stored securely via encrypted software in the vehicle with no biometric details uploaded or stored remotely, says Genesis.
The new system works in tandem with the car’s pre-existing fingerprint recognition system, which can also be used to access or start the car sans-key.
“We are delighted to introduce the world’s first biometric experience on a car with the 2023 new model year changes for GV60, one of our most exciting models in Europe,” Genesis Motor Europe managing director Lawrence Hamilton said.
“Already featuring state-of-the-art elements, the new additions represent a further step towards innovation by introducing a never-seen-before advanced technology in the market whilst also proving Genesis’ commitment to offer a personalised and seamless experience to customers.”
At the moment, there are no concrete plans to offer Face Connect with the GV60 sold in Australia, but carsales understands the feature is under study and could be rolled out as part of a future model year update.
Other spec changes being made in Europe for the 2023 Genesis GV60 include an optional new ‘Digital Key’ feature allowing customers to lock or unlock their vehicles via their smartphones or smartwatch, plus the ability to share the virtual key with up to three people in real time for an adjustable period of time, such as five minutes or two hours.
Meanwhile, the ‘Ergo Motion’ massaging driver’s seat has been made standard on all grades, as have heated front and rear seats.
A new air purification system is also joining the fray, while the 64-colour ambient lighting system has been expanded into the lower reaches of the cabin.
