More traction for Renault vans

Renault Australia has confirmed it's keen to release new X-Track versions of the small Kangoo, mid-size Trafic and large Master commercial vans just released in France.

The French brand's new X-Track technology set includes a limited-slip differential, increased ride height, underbody protection and all-weather tyres, which together is claimed to deliver "even higher traction performance for intensive use in particularly challenging conditions”.

Renault says the extra traction and ground clearance extends the capability of the Grip Xtend traction control system fitted to its front-wheel drive Kangoo, Trafic and Master vans.

In addition, the Master – which is currently available in Australia in five front-wheel drive van configurations including a mini-bus, plus rear-wheel drive cab-chassis ute versions – is now also available in Europe with a four-wheel drive system for light commercial van customers heading off-road.

Renault Australia's LCV model line manager Lyndon Healey said his company will evaluate the three new X-Track front-drive model "with a view to making them available in due course".

"When it comes to traction performance, the needs of business customers can vary significantly depending on the terrain, conditions, type of work and payload,” he said.

"Compared with a standard transmission, the new Renault X-Track 4x2 technology delivers superior mobility on difficult terrain, in snow, unsealed surfaces and on poor quality roads.

“The Renault X-Track 4x2 is an alternative to four-wheel drive when off-road capability is not required. It delivers exceptional performance on poor roads and in difficult conditions.

"The option is available on Kangoo, Trafic and Master from the factory and we plan to evaluate the systems locally to determine their suitability for the Australian market."

The new Master 4x4, meantime, incorporates both normal 4x2 mode and a selectable 4x4 mode for poor quality roads or off-road use such as "inclines, slippery ground, unsealed surfaces, damp fields, muddy ground, poor roads, etc".

The factory 4x4 system will be available for both single- and dual-cab versions of the rear-drive Master cab-chassis, as well as a range of van bodies.

“Renault Australia will carry out specific market evaluation on the Master 4x4 in the near future to determine its suitability for our driving conditions,” said Healey.

"There is a large market for 4x4 dual-cabs in Australia and with our high payload and up to seven-seat capacity, a Master 4x4 could be a handy addition to the range.”
