7-seater SUVs

Seven-seat SUVs are typically larger models, although some small SUVs offer third-row seating for younger children. Even in medium, large or extra-large SUVs, the third-row seats are often short of legroom or headroom for adults and are usually reserved for children, particularly those yet to reach their teens. Medium SUVs with seating for seven are usually front-wheel drives only.

1. Kia Sorento

Initially a dinkum, dual-range off-roader, the Kia Sorento has softened and evolved into a large seven-seat SUV in a similar mould to the top-selling Toyota Kluger. Familiar locally since 2004, the Kia Sorento has morphed through three generations to become a respected class contender with a spacious cabin and, in optional five-seat mode, a capacious 605-litre boot. It scores points for offering 3.5-litre petrol V6 petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine options and is available in front-drive, or - in diesel only - on-demand AWD form. Both use eight-speed auto transmissions. A new generation of Kia Sorento has an appointment with Aussie buyers pencilled in for 2020.

2. Ford Everest

The Ford Everest has graced Australian showrooms from 2015, though its Down Under connection began long before that. Based on the Ranger ute's T6 ladder-frame platform, the Everest was engineered locally by Ford Australia. A 3.2-litre turbo-diesel was the initial engine of choice, offering 143kW and 470Nm. It was later joined by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 157kW and 500Nm - mated solely to the flagship Titanium grade. The Ford Everest is available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive forms, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. It is available as a five-seater or seven-seater.

3. Mazda CX-9

The Mazda CX-9, Mazda's biggest SUV, has long been popular among Aussie families, ever since its first launch in 2006. But when the second-generation version of the US-oriented large SUV arrived in 2016, it was named carsales Car of the Year. Available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive guise and priced between about $45,000 and $70,000, the CX-9 isn't the cheapest in its class and only comes with a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine and six-speed auto. But the CX-9's attractive design, spacious and comfortable interior, refined ride/handling package and generous level of quality and equipment makes it one of the best seven-seat SUVs available.
