GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Lighter, faster Bugatti Chiron Sport unleashed

Even more everything for the fastest Volkswagen Group car of them all

The Bugatti Chiron Sport has broken new ground in Geneva by becoming the first production car in history to offer carbon-fibre windscreen wipers.

Oh, and it has 1120kW of power (or 1500 European horses), but so does the standard car. None of its performance data changes.

The Chiron Sport is a go-even-faster pack for the already go-fast Chiron, with Bugatti insisting it laps the 6km Nardo handling circuit a full five seconds quicker than the standard Chiron.

Bugatti insists the car has been redesigned with cornering in mind, though the only visual differences will be its new wheels and its new quad-pipe exhaust system.

“We have developed the Chiron Sport for customers wanting an even sportier driving experience with their Chiron, with improved lateral dynamics on winding roads,” Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann said.

“What was important for us was to leave unchanged the unique character of the Chiron, its combination of ultimate performance, longitudinal acceleration and maximum speed with luxury, comfort and everyday usability.

“The Chiron Sport has become perceptibly more nimble and its new agility, especially in tight corners, makes for a much more emotional experience for the driver on winding roads and handling circuits,” he insisted.

More shocking than that, though, is that its first customers later this year will pay $US3.26 million price tag in the US (or €2.65 million in Europe), even though Bugatti makes no changes to the car’s performance data.

The car’s suspension has been stiffened, with the dampers tightened up by 10 per cent, the steering tweaked for greater response off centre and the addition of Dynamic Torque Vectoring for individual wheel control.

While not much of the extra speed comes from shedding 18kg from the stock version’s 1996kg mass, there are some significant details, like 3D printing for the aluminium tips of the windscreen wipers saving 1.4kg.

It saved weight in the new wheels as well, along with carbon-fibre stabiliser bars and its intercooler cover, plus lighter rear-window glass.
