Price shock for Genesis Electrified GV70

Single highly-specified EV version of medium luxury SUV checks in more than $12K upstream of expected asking price

Australia’s Genesis GV70 line-up has a new flagship in the form of the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 Performance AWD, which slots in at the top of the range priced from $127,800 plus on-road costs – quite a bit more than previously indicated by Genesis Australia.

Easily the most expensive and powerful variant of the entire mid-size luxury SUV range, the Electrified GV70 carries a huge $43,100 premium over the now penultimate 3.5T AWD variant and out-muscles it by 81kW/170Nm.

The EV’s peak power and torque figures of 360kW/700Nm come courtesy of an all-electric dual-motor powertrain fed by a 77.4kWh lithium-ion battery, which can be charged at up to 350kW when using a DC fast-charger, meaning it can go from 10-80 per cent of charge in just 18 minutes.

The result of all this is a 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 4.2 seconds and an effective driving range of up to 445km on the WLTP cycle, claims Genesis.

The Genesis Electrified GV70 is distinguished from its petrol and diesel stablemates by its aerodynamic grille finish, bespoke 20-inch alloys, tweaked bumper designs and inherent lack of exhaust outlets.

Like the Genesis Electrified G80 sedan, the zero-emission GV70 uses the loaded 3.5T AWD variant as the basis for its standard equipment list and throws in the usually optional Luxury pack as standard.

Road-Preview adaptive suspension, a glass roof, LED headlights, Nappa leather upholstery, ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, 18-way power-adjustable front seats with massage function, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, heated second row, remote smart parking assist, 14.5-inch infotainment interface, 14-speaker Lexicon sound system, active noise control and 3.6kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality comprise the headline creature comforts, among plenty of other toys.

The standard safety suite is also as long as your arm and includes all of the active and passive systems demanded these days by both consumers and industry safety bodies.

Thirteen colours – nine gloss, four matte – will be available for the Electrified GV70, including the new ‘Atacama Copper’ hero colour which is being offered in both finishes.

Genesis Australia boss Connal Yan said alternative powertrains were now at the core of the brand’s product development strategy, which will eventually see eco-friendly offerings present in every portfolio segment.

“We are immensely excited to introduce three new all-electric models this year, as the first realisation of our vision of creating a sustainable mobility future with electrification front and centre,” he said.

“The arrival of the progressive Electrified GV70, along with the dedicated electric GV60 and Electrified G80, will represent an audacious stride into that future.”

The Electrified GV70’s arrival will boost the premium Korean brand’s electric model count to three later this month, comprising four individual variants: one GV70, one G80 and two GV60s.

Elsewhere in the GV70 range, prices of the internal combustion versions have quietly risen by around $2100 for the new model year, with no indication yet of tweaked or adjusted equipment levels.

How much does the 2023 Genesis GV70 cost?
2.5T – $68,500 (+$2100)
2.5T AWD – $70,900 (+$2114)
2.2D AWD – $73,200 (+$2106)
