Diesel Family Cars
Diesel family cars could be SUVs, dual-cab pick-ups, crew-cab vans or passenger cars, but diesel sedans and wagons are not as popular as they were some years ago. That's mainly due to the impact of overseas emissions legislation, which favours petrol/electric hybrid powertrains over diesel engines, known for the particulate emissions. People movers, particularly those based on commercial vans, are often diesel-powered. Diesel engines remain especially common in one-tonne pick-ups also, a well as SUVs based on those pick-ups.

1. Toyota RAV4
Launched in Australia during 1994, the Toyota RAV4 is a well established model name that has, nonetheless, evolved considerably from its conception. Originally a boutique styling exercise based on soft-road mechanicals and platform, the RAV4 quickly became a capable off-roader, underpinning Toyota's broader SUV range in Australia. The SUV has also grown drastically over time, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 five-door model nearly a metre longer than the first three-door model from 26 years ago. That first generation of Toyota RAV4 would have been a small SUV today, but the 2020 model is very definitely a medium SUV in VFACTS parlance.
