Fuel Efficient Family Cars
Fuel-efficient family cars are vehicles that have been specifically designed to cost little to run, and be kind to the environment. The vehicles may be hybrids or they may be powered by diesel or downsized petrol engines. Some smaller models from prestige brands are rated below the 7.0L/100km trigger for the luxury car tax, thus gaining a pricing advantage in the market. These vehicles are usually conventional hatchbacks, sedans or wagons, but may also be SUVs and people movers.

1. Toyota RAV4
Launched in Australia during 1994, the Toyota RAV4 is a well established model name that has, nonetheless, evolved considerably from its conception. Originally a boutique styling exercise based on soft-road mechanicals and platform, the RAV4 quickly became a capable off-roader, underpinning Toyota's broader SUV range in Australia. The SUV has also grown drastically over time, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 five-door model nearly a metre longer than the first three-door model from 26 years ago. That first generation of Toyota RAV4 would have been a small SUV today, but the 2020 model is very definitely a medium SUV in VFACTS parlance.

Currently the brand's mid-sized SUV, the Volvo XC60 was introduced to rival prestige European-built models such as the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. Today, the XC60 is Volvo's best-selling model Down Under, available with five seats, in all-wheel drive only and featuring a generous line-up of engines that include petrol, diesel, mild-hybrid and high-performance options. A range-topping XC60 Polestar was introduced in late 2019 to rival luxury/performance SUVs like the BMW X3 M40i and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, bringing 311kW of power and 670Nm of torque from its advanced 2.0-litre turbo-petrol/electric motor drivetrain combination.

While a latecomer to jump on the SUV bandwagon, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has been well-received and is now the brand's top-selling vehicle. Named after the infamous Stelvio pass in Italy - one of the wildest roads in Europe - the curvy-looking medium-sized luxury SUV launched in 2016, powered by a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio received a mid-life update in 2020 with a subtle new look and improvements to the previously criticised interior. Pricing for the Italian competitor to the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC starts at around $66,000 and rises to $150,000 for the rip-snorting 375kW Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio model.
