Family People Movers

Passenger cars that are designed to seat seven, or even eight passengers, including the driver. Family people movers are typically vehicles priced below the luxury car tax threshold and appealing to large families that are limited by their budget. The affordability of people movers in this sector of the market doesn't make them any the less fit for purpose, but they lack the gadgetry of more expensive models.

1. Kia Carnival

After 20 years in the market the Kia Carnival has established itself as the nation's most popular people mover. Early examples of the Carnival incurred a reputation for the V6 engines warping cylinder heads, but that is largely forgotten now. From the advent of the third generation in 2014 the Carnival migrated to a new platform that was shared with the Sorento SUV, delivering much improved driveabilty and comfort. With an eight-seat capacity, the Kia Carnival accommodates more than even the largest of SUVs, and a new generation of Kia Carnival is scheduled to arrive in Australia for 2020.

The Volkswagen Multivan, as its name suggests, is a multi-use van, with passenger comfort and versatility at the forefront. Based off the same T6 platform as the Caravelle and Transporter, the Multivan offers a number of seating arrangements for up to seven people, including the ability to rotate the captain's chairs to face the rear seats. Like VW's other van options, the Volkswagen Multivan is available in a number of trim grades and wheelbases and is driven exclusively by turbo-diesel power. An all-new electric Volkswagen Multivan is due in Australia around 2022.

3. Honda Odyssey

Now a quarter of a century old, the Honda Odyssey model line introduced Australians to a people mover that drove like a passenger car. Featuring mechanicals shared with the Accord sedan, the seven-seat Odyssey was also available with a V6 engine at one time. A new generation in 2004 ushered in a very sleek, striking style that proved very popular at the time. In 2014 Honda turned its back on that dramatic styling for a new-generation Honda Odyssey that opted for space efficiency in a more upright package, also replacing the previous model's five-speed automatic transmission with a continuously-variable transmission.
