1. Ford Everest

The Ford Everest has graced Australian showrooms from 2015, though its Down Under connection began long before that. Based on the Ranger ute's T6 ladder-frame platform, the Everest was engineered locally by Ford Australia. A 3.2-litre turbo-diesel was the initial engine of choice, offering 143kW and 470Nm. It was later joined by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 157kW and 500Nm - mated solely to the flagship Titanium grade. The Ford Everest is available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive forms, with a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. It is available as a five-seater or seven-seater.

2. Toyota Landcruiser Prado

Based originally on the architecture of the HiLux ute, the Toyota LandCruiser Prado officially arrived in Australia during 1996. Although a different vehicle from the 80 Series LandCruiser of the time, the Prado inherited the 'LandCruiser' name as part of its badge - reflecting both the market awareness of the LandCruiser name and Toyota's aspirations for the new four-wheel drive wagon. Since then, the Toyota LandCruiser Prado has gone on to be the best-selling vehicle in the large SUV segment, but is still marketed as the Toyota LandCruiser Prado.

3. Jeep Wrangler

Harking back to the WWII Willys Jeep, the Jeep Wrangler is the American brand's most off-road oriented model and, since 1986 has been available in short- and long wheelbase, rear- and four-wheel drive, and two-door and four-door variants, with petrol and diesel engines and manual and automatic transmissions. The US-built Jeep Wrangler has spawned four-door Gladiator ute and hard-core off-road Rubicon versions over the course of its model life. The fourth-generation Jeep Wrangler arrived in Australia in 2019 with higher pricing, more technology and greater refinement, while retaining traditional Wrangler features like removable hard panel or soft-top roof and countless Mopar accessories.
