Extra-Large SUVs

Extra-large SUVs are heavy-duty seven-seat wagons that measure around five metres in length or longer. These vehicles are popular with grey nomads and are specifically designed for towing larger caravans or horse floats. They’re powered by high-torque engines – usually diesel, but not always – driving all four wheels through a dual-range transfer system for optimal off-road ability.

1. BMW X7

BMW expanded its SUV portfolio yet again in 2018 with the introduction of a new three-row variant known as the X7. The US-built behemoth landed in Australia in 2019 as a rival to the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz GLS, among many others. Heavily based on the latest-generation X5, with which it shares all of its engines, the BMW X7 is akin to a high-riding 7 Series; that is, it will debut many new luxury, safety and technology appointments for BMW before their trickle through to the rest of the range. The BMW X7 is available in petrol and diesel grades, both sending drive to all four wheels.

2. Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Taking its cues from the S-Class luxury limo, the very large GL SUV became the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class in 2016. The name change was accompanied by a minor upgrade for the American-built SUV. In Australia the importer offers the GLS in two variants, one petrol, the other diesel. The lower priced petrol model is the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, with a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder, and the diesel is the Mercedes-Benz GLS 400 d - also powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. Both variants are four-wheel drives and the range will expand with the launch of the V8-engined Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 late in 2020.

3. Toyota Landcruiser

In the US the generic name for a heavy-duty four-wheel drive is 'Jeep', but in Australia it's 'LandCruiser'. The Toyota LandCruiser arrived in Australia in 1957 and the model line quickly overtook the Land Rover in the hearts and minds of Australians, winning them over with its combination of robustness and off-road capability. In rural and regional areas the Toyota LandCruiser has been the off-road wagon of choice for government utilities and the mining industry. The Toyota LandCruiser has been a massive sales success in Australia over a number of years, outselling its one close competitor, the Nissan Patrol, in a ratio as high as five to one.
