Fuel efficient SUVs

Offering low-running costs and a reduced environmental footprint, fuel-efficient SUVs are powered by engines displacing smaller capacities and making up for any performance deficit with turbocharging. Often front-wheel drives, these are not off-road machines, but otherwise do provide the family-friendly practicality consumers expect of SUVs.

1. Toyota RAV4

Launched in Australia during 1994, the Toyota RAV4 is a well established model name that has, nonetheless, evolved considerably from its conception. Originally a boutique styling exercise based on soft-road mechanicals and platform, the RAV4 quickly became a capable off-roader, underpinning Toyota's broader SUV range in Australia. The SUV has also grown drastically over time, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 five-door model nearly a metre longer than the first three-door model from 26 years ago. That first generation of Toyota RAV4 would have been a small SUV today, but the 2020 model is very definitely a medium SUV in VFACTS parlance.

2. Toyota C-HR

Arriving in Australia at the end of 2016, the Toyota C-HR clearly signalled a change of direction for Toyota, now setting its sights on younger buyers who had previously chosen the unconventionally styled Nissan Juke over any SUV offered by Toyota. The C-HR was smaller than any current Toyota SUV and was introduced with a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine coupled to a continuously-variable transmission. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants were available. The appeal of the Toyota C-HR rests with its cutting-edge visual presentation, its urban lifestyle cred and the usual Toyota virtues of dependability, low running costs and affordable comfort.

3. Lexus UX

The Lexus UX - for 'Urban Explorer' - is one of the newest models from the Japanese luxury car giant, launching in Japan and Europe in 2018 and in Australia in early 2019. Quickly becoming the brand's second-best seller Down Under, the Lexus UX is the smallest SUV in the Lexus range. A direct rival to the Audi Q3 and BMW X1, the Lexus UX is closely related to the Toyota C-HR and is the first Lexus model to use the GA-C platform. As an eventual replacement for the CT 200h hatch, the Lexus UX is priced from under $50,000 and powered exclusively by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels. Range-topping models feature a different all-wheel drive hybrid system.
