Priced in excess of the luxury car tax threshold and provide owners with all the creature comforts of home, in a package that can tow and (usually) head into the bush. With the exceptions of higher-priced Jeeps, the Lexus LX and most Land Rovers, luxury SUVs are not often hard-core off-road machines.

1. Volkswagen Touareg

Grabbing a Highly Commended spot at the 2019 carsales Car of The Year, the Volkswagen Touareg has spanned three-generations since its arrival in 2002. Today, it shares its underpinnings with the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus, and is offered in two trim grades and turbo-diesel power only. Although it's a large SUV, the Volkswagen Touareg is sold with a five-seat option only. A more powerful plug-in hybrid Touareg R is sold overseas, however VW Australia has no plans to introduce it Down Under.

2. BMW X7

BMW expanded its SUV portfolio yet again in 2018 with the introduction of a new three-row variant known as the X7. The US-built behemoth landed in Australia in 2019 as a rival to the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz GLS, among many others. Heavily based on the latest-generation X5, with which it shares all of its engines, the BMW X7 is akin to a high-riding 7 Series; that is, it will debut many new luxury, safety and technology appointments for BMW before their trickle through to the rest of the range. The BMW X7 is available in petrol and diesel grades, both sending drive to all four wheels.

3. Volvo XC40

The Volvo XC40 is the Swedish car maker's small-SUV offering. Winner of the 2018 carsales Car Of The Year, the XC40 was introduced in the same year, ready to rival similar-sized premium SUVs like the Jaguar E-PACE and Lexus UX. Today, the Volvo XC40 is sold in three trim levels - Momentum, Inscription and range-topping R-Design - with the only choice of engine a turbocharged four-cylinder and either front- or all-wheel drive layouts. In 2019, the manufacturer revealed a pure-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge, with twin-motors and all-wheel drive, which the company wants to have on sale by 2021.
