Small SUVs

Small SUVs are boxy, practical family wagons, usually less than 4.5 metres in length. Typically priced from below $30,000, these vehicles are mostly front-wheel drives, designed primarily for family-car duties in the suburbs – picking up kids from schools or making the weekly grocery run. Even small SUVs with all-wheel drive are not vehicles designed to go bush-bashing.

1. Kia Seltos

Filling a gap in the range below the Kia Sportage, the Kia Seltos is a small SUV that comes close to matching the proportions of mid-sizers including its sibling, the Sportage. Launched into the Australian market during 2019, the Kia Seltos is based on the Hyundai Kona - though it's fractionally longer and therefore more accommodating - and is available in front-drive or AWD form and with a choice of two petrol engines: A normally-aspirated 2.0-litre and a punchy 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol which drives through a seven-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox rather than the 2.0-litre's CVT.

2. Toyota C-HR

Arriving in Australia at the end of 2016, the Toyota C-HR clearly signalled a change of direction for Toyota, now setting its sights on younger buyers who had previously chosen the unconventionally styled Nissan Juke over any SUV offered by Toyota. The C-HR was smaller than any current Toyota SUV and was introduced with a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine coupled to a continuously-variable transmission. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants were available. The appeal of the Toyota C-HR rests with its cutting-edge visual presentation, its urban lifestyle cred and the usual Toyota virtues of dependability, low running costs and affordable comfort.
